I.N.R.I
"Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews"
by Scott Zambelli
Over the last couple of weeks, I've been feeling led to draw a picture of the crucifixion. I've done many different sketches of this over the last three years or so. However, I was never satisfied with the results and the project never would go beyond the rough draft phase.
I believe I received my final inspiration from our latest service at church. Our Pastor was describing to us the various stations of the cross and how Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" took us through these various scenes. I wasn't sure to what end I was moving toward, but I knew I needed to make some time to watch this great film once again.
It was during my time in solitude with this movie that I began to sketch some more. It was during this time that I realized that I wanted to portray something more intimate than a full-length drawing of the crucifixion. Instead, I wanted to focus on a very limited area of this scene and focus our attention on the pain and exhaustion endured by our Savior. Once I recognized this, I was able to find a composition I liked based upon the movie.
Now that I have finished the piece, I feel I was able to accomplish what I had set out to do. I will leave my thoughts there, as I do not want too much of my introspection to get in the way of you forming your own experience from this artwork. I pray the Lord will be able to use this artwork to speak into the hearts of those who view it in whatever manner is needed for them to grow closer to Him.
